Flea Find.

Just imagine: Saturday morning, coffee in hand, rifling through a box of old photographs at a flea market hoping to find something or other... and stumbling across these! Well, that's just what happened. A cache of previously unseen tour snapshots of the (very young!) Rolling Stones splashin in a motel pool were discovered at a flea market by a lucky shopper in Saugus, California. Lucky duck. The collection of photos will be on view at the Dilettante Gallery in LA until October 26.

Willie Nelson's 4th of July Picnic

Every year July 4th rolls around and every year Willie helps us celebrate. If feels like it's been happening that way for ages. The tradition kicked off in 1973 with shaky legs. (The concert rumored to be an all out disaster.) Luckily in '74 Willie got it right. Word has it someone dubbed the infamous picnic “The Great Willie Nelson Commando Hoo-Ha and Texas Brain Fry.” Seems about right. Beer. Boobs. Outsider country. Weed. Fire (yep, some out of hand fireworks lit a few cars on fire). So crack a cold one, spark it up and pretend you're celebrating America's birthday with Willie this year. That's what I'm going to do.

Sir Paul

I find myself listening to Paul McCartney relatively often and inevitably it makes me think of my dad. Of driving around in out beat up, olive green Volvo S40 with something blaring from the tape deck. Sometimes is was Laurie Anderson or Joni Mitchell. A lot of the time it was the Grateful Dead (Shakedown Street was my favorite). The Stones made appearances too. But my favorite was Paul. I loved it when my dad would pop in the Ram cassette and I could forget for a moment that I was in a stinky, hot Volvo and imagine I was rambling through my short life in some more glamorous, eclectic fashion - like I was the Long Haired Lady. Instead we were headed to our own little home in the Heart of the Country. Which, honestly, in hindsight was just perfect. My childhood, and I'm sure thousands of others', wouldn't have been the same without his music. So, I couldn't let today pass without wishing Sir Paul a happy 70th and thank him for all the Silly Love Songs.

Moonrise Mix

Here's a hump day treat: Moonrise Kingdom mixes! I've been smitten with Wes Anderson since I stumbled across Rushmore in high school. I later made the hour long trek to the nearest "art theater" - twice - to see Royal Tenenbaums. Ah, the pains of growing up in small town Texas. It was worth every mile and I think I still might drive an hour to see that gem on the big screen. Needless to say, I can't wait to see Anderson's latest, Moonrise Kingdom. These mixes will have to tide my over in the mean time. That and maybe another viewing or two of the trailer...

SXSW Wrap Up

Another SXSW come and gone. It was an exhausting, amazing week full of music discoveries, sunshine, good friends, free beer, early happy hours, dancing, more free beer, people (and shoe!) watching, pop-up shops & yeah, a bit more free beer. Boy Friend (pictured above), Washed Out & Zola Jesus played incredible sets but Tanlines really killed it. The closed the week down with a chillpop, calypso dance party that I'm still dreaming about. South By, I'll miss you, but I'm ready for a long bath & some quiet time.
